History

Hamm's origins can be traced back to the Saint Catherine Monastery founded in the 14th century, around which the village grew. Hamm used to belong to the municipality of Sandweiler. Its proximity to the Alzette lead to the construction of several mills.

In 1830, the Godchaux brothers founded a textile factory in Schleifmühle. Hamm's population grew along with the expansion of this factory which, at its peak, employed 800 people. In 1874, Hamm became its own municipality. Following its economic decline, Hamm was absorbed into Luxembourg City in 1920.
